A great pair of slippers can make any day at home better. They support your feet during daily chores, work-from-home meetings, and even quick runs to the mailbox. They also make a fantastic gift for busy parents, a grandma or grandpa, or your partner who deserves more comfort throughout the day.

For you, an excellent slipper may help you stay warm during the winter months, support your feet on hardwood and carpet, and look stylish both inside your home and out. For us, the best slippers last over time, remain comfortable all day, and provide the perfect amount of warmth without overheating.

To help find the perfect pair for you or someone you love, we spent over 1,000 hours testing slippers from the most popular footwear brands, wearing them daily, and evaluating how they look, feel, and perform over time. We then ranked them on quality, comfort, durability, and value to find the best of the best.

What We Don't Like

Snug at first

Not vegan-friendly

For the perfect slipper that seamlessly transitions from indoor to outdoor wear, look at the beloved Tasman slipper from Ugg. The fashionable slippers have a suede construction lined with soft sheepskin and upcycled wool to keep your feet warm without overheating, which we love for day-long wear. While testing, this pick felt snug initially and needed a few days of wear to break in—as with all plush-lined Uggs. They are also difficult to slip on at first, and you’ll have to use your hands to put them on securely. But once the fur flattens and molds to your foot, they'll fit perfectly. This also allows you to wear thick socks with these slippers but does not affect the fit, at least what we found during testing.

We loved the comfortable fit after the initial break-in period of about three wears, which kept our feet warm during the cold days while remaining versatile and durable. The hard rubber sole makes the Tasman slippers perfect for trips to the mailbox, even with a wet or snowy driveway in your way. However, the suede upper may be difficult to clean, so we recommend spraying your Uggs with a protective spray before wearing them outdoors.

In addition to being extremely comfortable, these slippers also triumph in their design. The "Tasman braid" is made mostly from recycled polyester and is a stylish accent that separates these slippers from the competition. Plus, they come in tons of neutral and bright colors for all ages and preferences. After three months of testing, we love that the slippers show no wear and tear even after daily use. While the price is higher than other options on our list, we think these are worth it given their high quality, recycled materials, trendy look, and warm lining.

Thin footbed

The NineCiFun Women's Slip-on Fuzzy House Slippers have a slip-on style that’s perfect for busy mornings, and these were the most undeniably soft slippers we tested. When you slip these on, the faux fur feels like a warm embrace for your feet. Compared to the Uggs,  there is no break-in period with these slippers. The faux fur and memory foam insole are thinner than others on this list, but that means the interior won’t matte over time. They are not as supportive as other options because of the thin sole, but they have a thin rubber outsole if you have to run outside, thought we would recommend using these as mostly indoor shoes.

Despite the thin footbed, these slippers are lightweight and easy to store. Unlike a pair of booties or thick-soled Uggs, they take up little space in your closet or under your bed and are easy to pack in a weekend bag.

The upper uses knitting fleece for a quilted style to match your favorite sweater. With an exposed faux fur lining and horn button, they’re classically good-looking. They come in 13 colors, so you can always match your slippers to your lounge outfit.

Stay warm and sweat-free all day right outside of the box in these Shearling Wool Clogs from Parachute. The cozy shearling combined with inner foam cushioning makes these a warm and cozy option for those who need extra warmth during the winter months. While this foam cushioning inevitably flattens over time, the slippers remained comfortable for months without visible damage or wear.

We could stand for hours in these slippers and still feel comfortable and supported with no break-in period. You may not think the clog style is always the warmest, but the added shearling kept us toasty while still being breathable. However, these slippers are a bit heavy, so our feet didn’t always feel secure.

What We Don't Like

Can’t slip on without using your hands

For a truly versatile slipper you can transition from days on the couch to days full of errands, we recommend L.L. Bean's Wicked Good Squam Lake Booties. These slippers are named "wicked good" for a reason. The rubber sole makes them perfect for outdoor adventures, and we found that they held up beautifully after three months of use indoors and out. The traction remains intact, while the interior remains comfortable and supportive. They are also stylish enough to pair with any cold-weather outfit. Because of the bootie style, they do take a bit of extra effort to put on, rather than a classic slip-on style, but we found this worth it for the versatility.

Made with a velvet suede upper and lambswool for cozy comfort, we found that they keep your feet warm during the winter without feeling too hot. A common complaint with some slippers is that the interior lining is too hot for the warmer months. Suede, faux fur, and shearling can cause feet to sweat, which can be uncomfortable when wearing them for long periods.

Yet, we enjoyed them through hot and cold days and can easily slip on socks if the temperature drops. Sweaty feet aren't an issue with these slippers. Plus, they provide solid traction on any surface. These are excellent house shoes.

When we slipped on the Vionic Relax Slippers for the first time, we were blown away by the arch support. These were the most supportive slippers we tested, they have Vionic’s signature orthotic footbed is covered in terrycloth for a soft and supportive step every time. They felt comfortable for hours—without a single blister or moment of pain.

The Relax Slippers have an adjustable open-toe design. The first time we wore these, we used the velcro straps to fit the slippers to our feet. After that, the slippers effortlessly slip onto our feet and stay put throughout the day. Without the adjustability, they may feel slightly heavy, but the hefty strap keeps them from slipping off your feet while working from home or completing household tasks. We also love the adjustability for those going through a pregnancy or other periods of life when your foot size might fluctuate.

Also, because they are adjustable, you can pair them with thin or thick socks to combat the lack of warmth caused by the open-toe design. Still, we opted for no socks because the supportive slippers feel like they were made just for your feet. You can wear them year-round and adjust your socks depending on the weather. Trust us, the support is worth adding a few extra layers for warmth.

Expert Tip

If you don’t like the open-toed or slide style, opt for another slipper from the brand with the same footbed. We’ve tested and also like Vionic’s Gemma Mule Slipper, which has the same footbed as the Vionic Relax Slipper. We’ve also tested these. The mule design provides warmth with the same amount of impressive support with every step.

Shopping for a dad, brother, or husband? Opt for these stylish and functional suede leather moccasins from Lands’ End. Available in four colors and both medium and wide sizes, the suede upper looks undeniably sophisticated and mimics a fashionable loafer, while the rubber sole provides traction on all surfaces, including the driveway or sidewalk.

We found that there was no break-in period with these slippers, which we love. Unlike other slippers we tested, the faux fur lining did not mat or thin after weeks of testing. The lining felt warm even without socks but never got uncomfortably hot or sweaty. While they don’t have dedicated arch support, the thick rubber sole provides a solid cushion as you walk.

The moccasin style ensures the slippers stay securely on your feet for hours, whether you’re cleaning or assembling furniture at home. Plus, for an additional $8, you can customize the slippers with one or two letters for a special touch that’s excellent for personalized gifting.

Thin rubber sole

While nothing sounds better than keeping your toes warm in fluffy slippers on a cold winter night, sweating and smelling after hours in your favorite house shoes is never comfortable. Stay warm and sweat-free with a memory foam option like these from RockDove. The breathable slippers have a memory foam lining that feels plush and supportive on your feet, especially on hardwood floors, but don’t expect anything thick like an Ugg rubber sole or Vionic footbed. The cushioning feels soft for post-work wear, but we wouldn’t recommend wearing them all day long.

They are lightweight and easy to slip on, which we love for convenience. The lack of fur or faux fur and open back keep your feet at the perfect temperature all year round. On extra cold nights, we recommend wearing a pair of thick socks, plus the slippers. We found there is plenty of room to add an extra layer or two.

The rubber sole provides traction on any surface, plus you can wear them outside. If you do, you’ll be happy to know they are also machine washable. The two-tone waffle knit design looks and feels high-quality despite being lightweight and bendable. We also love the unique color options.

Little support

Wool slippers like these we tested from Glerups absorb moisture in your feet, so they’re ideal for wearing year-round, even in the summer when all slippers may feel too warm and sweaty. The wool also traps heat, so the slippers will keep you warm during the winter, but we found that these worked best in the fall, spring, and summer. During winter, you can add a pair of socks for extra warmth.

These slippers may feel strange at first because they are much flatter than traditional rubber-sole slippers or cushioned sneakers we wear throughout the day. Still, the leather sole feels comfortable and supportive, and there is a little arch support. We found that they almost feel closer to socks than classic slippers because of the thin soles and lightweight feel. They might feel like they are going to slip off, but they don’t. However, we found they sometimes felt slightly slippery on hardwood and tile.

The high-quality slippers look and function just as well after three months of daily use. The wool is a bit difficult to clean, but a damp cloth wipes the dirt away easily.

Liner gets dirty and matted quickly

If you love wearing classic Crocs in your everyday life, you’ll love this plush-lined version, designed for the indoors. The lined clogs have the same shape as traditional Crocs but have a faux fur lining to keep your feet warm. We found the lining to be overly warm, even with the breezy rubber upper, so we recommend these for winter use.

As with all Crocs, these slippers feel like they will last for years. They’re seamless to slip on and off, but for a little extra security, you can move the top strap to the back of your heel so it stays put. The rubber clogs work on any surface and can also be worn outdoors. They’re easy to clean, but light colors with matching faux fur may get dirty over time. The faux fur also mats very quickly, unlike other options we tested. This does not affect the shoe's comfort but don’t expect a plush, fuzzy lining to envelop your entire foot.

We do wish the faux fur lining would be removable so you could wash the two separately. This would also make the Crocs more suitable for indoor and outdoor wear for all seasons. Still, we love this option as a warmer alternative to the traditional, beloved clog.

Sizes span shoe sizes

If you can’t decide between a pair of fuzzy socks and your favorite slippers, get the best of both worlds with Bomba’s Gripper Slipper. The sock/slipper hybrid slips on like a pair of socks and has a cushioned footbed with a plush wool lining to keep your feet toasty. Of course, these do not have the same support as a traditional slipper, but they are more comfortable than socks alone and include grips on the bottom to avoid slips. After testing, we recommend being careful on hardwood floors.

Because the sizes span between a few shoe sizes, there is a chance these slippers will be slightly too big or small—our testers had opposite experiences. Some felt the slippers were too big, which led to the material slipping and sliding when you wear them, while others felt the slippers were too small, causing the grips and seams to be felt on the bottoms of your feet. Still, we all agreed that they’re extremely comfortable, and we love that these can be worn when lounging on couches or beds, whereas we would not wear hard-bottomed shoes on these surfaces.

We love that these are machine-washable, which is especially important since these slippers go up to your ankle. We found them very warm, but we caution that your feet can quickly get sweaty. Because of that, we recommend the Gripper Slippers for cold climates or especially frigid nights.

For those who live in warmer places and simply want a house shoe to provide support on hardwood floors, we love these open-toed pillow slippers. Viral on Tiktok, these thick-soled slides add 1.7 inches between you and the ground.

Because these slides are so thick and cushioned, they initially felt off-balanced. The squishy slides were unlike any shoe we tried before, but we loved the support they provided. Once you get used to the height, you’ll love how they constantly feel like you are walking on a thick carpet with a slight bounce in your step. The rubber has great traction on all surfaces, especially wood and tile which is what we mostly tested them on.

Again, these are not warm slippers at all. You can always add a pair of comfy socks in the winter, but these are better suited for summertime or year-round with the heat on. We also saw that the bends of these slides can begin to wear and tear after a few months of use. Still, for such an affordable price, you can’t go wrong with these bouncy slides that come in 16 trendy colors.

Explanatory graphic on how to pick the right pair of slippers

The Spruce / Hilary Allison

How We Tested the Slippers

Our editors researched slippers from reputable brands while still looking for slippers that accommodated all budgets and needs. We then ordered 46 pairs of slippers and distributed them to testers with varied sizes and style preferences. We wore the slippers for at least four weeks during our daily routines indoors and out and then had to rank the slippers, evaluating factors like the quality of the slippers, comfort, durability, and design. Some we logged over three months of wear, and noted how they held up over time with repeated daily use.

After over 1,000 hours of testing, we rounded up the scores from our panel to find our top 11 picks and assigned "Best" category titles to the appropriate slippers, based on our editor’s research, insight, and ratings.

What to Look for in a Pair of Slippers Design

There are a few main styles of slippers that you can consider when shopping. This will be the first step in determining the right slipper for you, especially if you’re interested in how fashionable your slippers look.

Moccasins: Moccasins are often made of soft, bendable leather with visible stitching and a furry lining, like the Lands' End Men's Suede Leather Moccasin Slipper (our best for men pick). Slides: Slides are a great option for quickly putting on and taking off your slippers, and they mimic a classic athletic slide, like the Bronax Pillow Slides (our best open-toed pick). These do not tend to be warm, but you can often add a pair of socks for added warmth.  Mules: Mule slippers have no back, but a closed toe (unlike slides) which adds breathability to slippers that could otherwise become too warm. Many, including the RockDove Women's Original Two-Tone Memory Foam Slipper (our best for sweaty feet pick), feature a small lip at the back of the shoe to reduce the chance of slipping as you walk.  Clogs: Similar to mules, clogs, like the Croc slippers (our best clogs), offer a completely closed-toe design with an open back, but clogs are often heavier. We love the Crocs because they have an optional strap to keep your slippers in place as you walk.  Material

When choosing slippers, one of the most important factors to consider is their material. Generally, you should opt for natural materials over synthetics. While wool and polyester materials, like those seen in our best wool pick, the Glerups Wool Slip-On Leather, can keep you warm in cold weather, they aren't as breathable and can cause your feet to sweat. On the other hand, sheepskin or shearling materials—such as those used in the Parachute Shearling Wool Clogs (our best warm pick)—are great for providing warmth while preventing your feet from overheating. For a vegan-friendly option that still provides warmth, opt for faux fur like in our best budget option, the NineCiFun Slip on Slippers, which have the same softness but often aren’t as thick or plush.

Soles

"Generally, a rubber or synthetic sole is best for most surfaces as it provides the best shock absorption," says Dr. Bruce Pinker, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon at Progressive Foot Care. Rubber is durable, waterproof, and provides good traction. Dr. Hillary Brenner, a board-certified podiatric surgeon agrees, saying, “I suggest finding slippers that contain EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate), which is a type of foam that is helpful with shock absorption,” which you can find in brands like Crocs and Bronax.

Many options on this list, including our best for men favorite (Lands’ End Suede Moccasin Slipper), feature a rubber sole that varies in thickness and offers plenty of traction on all surfaces. Rubber soles often allow you to wear slippers outdoors as well. If you want a pair that functions in the outdoor elements, opt for the L.L. Bean Squam Lake Booties (our best indoor/outdoor pick). They feature a cross-hatch grooved tread on the sole for walking through rain or snow. Just remember to treat your slippers with a protective spray to help them last longer if you plan to wear them outdoors.

Care Instructions

When wearing a pair of slippers day after day, you’ll want to make sure you keep them clean. Fuzzy slippers may be warm and comfortable, but they can often be difficult to clean, which can lead to an unpleasant odor over time. Most slippers on this list can only be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. For exceptionally easy cleaning, opt for our best slipper sock pick, the Bombas Gripper Slippers, which easily come clean in the washing machine.

Diana Rogers, DPM of Northern Illinois Foot and Ankle Specialists, suggests using an antibacterial spray once a week to prevent bacteria buildup, which can lead to odor.
